Melton Classics wood turning artisans carry on the tradition and old world craftsmanship of manufacturing high quality wood columns crafted with care from the finest clear woods. Our ClassicWood™ exterior wood columns are manufactured with care from rot resistant woods such as Clear All Heart Redwood and Western Red Cedar and are further rot, weather and moisture protected during our multi-step waterproofing and finishing process. We also provide our exterior wood columns with weatherproof fiberglass capitals and bases as standard. Our Interior wood columns are available for painted or stained column applications. Our AWI Custom Grade stain grade wood columns are built from the finest clear solid board lumber in your choice of solid board wood species for a beautiful natural stained wood appearance.

Quality Built Wood Columns

Our ClassicWood™ wood columns are manufactured from thick boards cut from only the finest clear woods, and glued with the strongest Type I waterproof glue. They are then bound under pressure, and cured for 24 hours to ensure a tight waterproof bond. The wood column shaft is then precision turned with the hands-on expertise of our experienced woodworking artisans using our CNC lathe. After turning, each exterior column shaft is then thoroughly coated with waterproof asphaltum paint on the interior of the shaft throughout its entire length. This important step of waterproofing the column shaft to ensure longevity of the column is not done by most other manufacturers thereby leaving the column open to water damage and decay. All our paint grade and stain grade wood columns are double hand sanded to a smooth finish, and paint grade columns are coated with two coats of primer.

Our authentic ClassicWood™ Classical Collection wood columns are designed to strictly conform to the Orders of Architecture as recorded in the late by the renowned Renaissance architect Vignola. Every element of our Classical Collection wood columns, from the authentic full proportions and bowed taper (entasis) of the wood column shaft, to the carefully sculpted detail of the capital and base, is specifically designed to have the timeless beauty and authenticity of authentic classically designed architectural columns from antiquity. Our ClassicWood™ wood columns are offered with round or square shaft styles with tapered or non-tapered column shafts in fluted or smooth shaft designs. We also offer over a dozen classical ornamental capitals to add beauty and elegance to your classically designed wood columns.

What to Look for When Buying Wood Columns

Wood columns if manufactured correctly will provide the warmth and lasting beauty for a generation that only wood columns can provide. However, most manufacturers do not build exterior wood columns to last, and as a result have given wood columns an undeserved bad reputation for lack of longevity.

1. Insist on rot resistant woods like Cedar or Redwood. No pine for exterior use.

2. Ensure that your wood columns are glued with a true Type One waterproof adhesive, not Casein water base glue.

3. Request fiberglass capitals and bases for your wood columns, not polyurethane foam.

4. Make sure the shafts of your wood columns are coated their full length with waterproofing asphaltum paint, and hand sanded and primed between two coats of primer.

5. Compare the shaft thickness between wood columns to avoid a shaft made too thin which will be susceptible to cracking.
